Kenya

For over two decades, Cordaid has been working closely with the Government of Kenya and local development partner organisations to address these challenges by creating sustainable agri-food systems and equitable access to humanitarian assistance, health care, education, and justice. We also engage in inclusive peace and reconciliation processes.

Cordaid strengthens the resilience of communities by engaging all stakeholders, especially those who are affected most by disasters. We put civil society organisations at the centre, by improving their capacity to engage in policy dialogue and by promoting an encouraging legal and financial environment.

WHAT WE DO IN KENYA

(B)eat the Locust
This project’s main objective is the diversification of the livelihoods of pastoralist communities in desert locust-prone areas in Kenya based on an environmentally friendly and scalable insect value chain.

The three pathways for achieving the objective include promoting the adaptation of biopesticides through policy as the preferred mechanism for controlling desert locust outbreaks in target communities, encouraging pastoralist communities to build livelihoods on insect value chains, and establishing insect value chains for human and animal consumption. The project targets pastoralists in Laikipia, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Samburu Counties.

Agribusiness Market Ecosystems Alliance
This is a collaboration of agencies working towards the professionalisation of farmer organisations. The alliance aims to promote global standardisation through coordinated business service delivery, utilising peer-reviewed assessment tools and a curriculum provided by certified trainers, coaches, and mentors.

It also strives to facilitate access to affordable finance and encourages the adoption of agricultural technology. Cordaid is the host and network facilitator of the AMEA Kenya local network, comprising 11 organisations.

Strengthening Agricultural Resilience through Learning and Innovation (STARLIT)
This project is being implemented by Cordaid in Kenya and Rwanda, targeting maize-growing areas of Kakamega County and Kayonza District. The project is funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). STARLIT supports rural productivity, access to markets, increased income and food security and promotes South-South learning.

Shared Futures
Shared Futures is an inclusive programme for just and peaceful coexistence. The programme aims to empower youth in Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River counties to take up a leading role in addressing violent extremism. It is implemented by a consortium of five organisations, with Cordaid as the lead.

The consortium, which includes Samba Sports, Jamii Action Center, Africa Youth Trust, and Anglican Development Services Pwani, works in collaboration with government representatives, policymakers, civil society organizations, and the community. Collectively, they work towards developing policies that promote interfaith cooperation. The project is a two-and-a-half-year initiative funded by Kerk in Actie.

Rural Kenya Financial Inclusion Facility
The Rural Kenya Financial Inclusion Facility of the Government of Kenya and the International Fund for Agricultural Development aims to increase access to finance for agribusinesses and smallholder farmers through technical support services and rural investment instruments.

In the project, Cordaid aims to offer technical support services to selected microfinance institutions and business development services to smallholder farmers and their organisations in 7 counties in western Kenya, namely Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Nandi, Siaya and Kisii counties. These services will contribute to more rural investments, employment, higher incomes and more gender equality in financial opportunities.

WHERE WE WORK IN KENYA

Cordaid works with numerous communities across Kenya. In the north, we have been working to build the capacity of pastoralist communities, their organisations and county governments to enhance resilience and adaptation to recurring natural disasters, including the adverse impacts of climate change.

In Western Kenya, Cordaid supports initiatives that promote agricultural productivity, value-chain development, and income generation.

In coastal Kenya, Cordaid works towards peaceful and just societies by enhancing the capabilities of communities and civil societies to resolve conflicts and promote social cohesion.

Our work spans Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, West Pokot, Laikipia, Kisumu, Kakamega, Mombasa, Kwale and Tana River Counties.
