In memoriam: Pope Francis

Cordaid

With profound gratitude and sorrow, Cordaid joins the global Catholic community in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis. May he rest in peace.

Pope Francis during a public blessing.

Pope Francis radiated mercy in everything he did. He was a beacon of compassion, justice, and unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human person, who constantly urged us to be on the margins of society, with those who are poorest, hurting, and bruised. He was deeply convinced that God works through humility and compassion. He actively sought to build bridges with other religious communities all over the world.

Solidarity and action

In response to the Pope’s invitation to create a new kind of solidarity and inspired by the Encyclical Letters Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, the global campaign ‘Together We – Act Today for a Better Tomorrow’ was launched with the aim to unite people in taking action to combat poverty, restore dignity to the excluded, and protect nature in the spirit of integral ecology.

Father J. Stuyt, member of the Supervisory Board of Cordaid and Rector of the Krijtberg in Amsterdam, praises the Pope for his social commitment. As such, according to him, the Pope’s following statement is telling:

not sharing your wealth with the poor is robbing them and taking away their livelihood. It is not our own goods that we possess, but theirs.”

His legacy lives on

We give thanks for Pope Francis prophetic voice in defence of peace and social justice. His legacy will continue to guide and strengthen us as we accompany communities affected by poverty, conflict, and inequality.

We cherish his memory in gratitude.
